Abstract
This chapter presents the modern psychophysiological approach to alcoholism to assist those who are actively engaged in this area and searching for new ways to hasten solutions of such medicosocial problems. Since the problems of alcoholism have been investigated under various scientific disciplines, it is not too presumptuous to assume that the scientific background of research workers on alcoholism is necessarily heterogeneous, covering a wide spectrum of disciplines.
Ellie. What do you run away for ? To sleep ? Captain Shotover. No. To get a glass of rum. Ellie (frightfully disillusioned) Is that it ? How disgusting! Do you like being drunk ? Captain Shotover. No: I dread being drunk more than anything in the world. —I drink now to keep sober—rum is not what it was: I have had ten glasses since you came; and it might be so much water… Heartbreak House, by G. Bernard Shaw (vol. 1, pp. 567–568, Dodd, Mead, & Co., New York, 1963)
