Electromagnetic Theory: A Spheroidal Model

  • Chapter
Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract

The phenomenon of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides a dramatic example for the modification of the optical properties of molecules near solid state surfaces. There is some experimental evidence that much, if not all, of the enhancement is associated with surface roughness in the range of 10 to 10,000 Å.1–13 Since the electrodynamic characteristics of a rough surface may differ considerably from those of a smooth surface, it is suggestive to regard SERS as being primarily of electrodynamic origin. In this chapter, we study a simple model14 for a rough surface, analyze the electrodynamic properties of the model, and explore some ramifications for the optical properties of nearby molecules.
