Abstract

The implications of spatial processes for resource competition have only recently received much attention. Theoretical approaches taken so far are classified as

  • island (or site-based) models which divide a larger habitat into local sites whose exact spatial location is unimportant

  • continuum models in which consumers and resources are continuously distributed along spatial coordinates

  • stepping-stone models which have discrete sites linked in a spatially explicit manner.
