Abstract

The epidemiology of coeliac disease is likely underestimated. Coeliac disease is becoming increasingly recognized in patients presenting only isolated iron, folate or calcium deficiencies (1,2) and in asymptomatic relatives of coeliac patients (3), so called latent coeliac disease. As consequence the malignancy risk claimed to be linked to gluten intolerance and villous atrophy may be underestimated.
