Lymphocytic Hypophysitis

Pituitary Tumors in Pregnancy

Part of the book series: Endocrine Updates ((ENDO,volume 15))

Abstract

Lymphocytic hypophysitis is an unusual disorder of the pituitary gland that presents with a sellar mass and/or hypopituitarism, most often associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period. Goudie and Pinkerton described the first case in 1962 in a 22 year old woman who developed postpartum amenorrhea and hypothyroidism 1. Fourteen months after childbirth, she developed shock during an appendectomy and died. Postmortem examination revealed lymphocytic thyroiditis, atrophic adrenals, and a lymphocytic infiltration of the pars anterior and pars intermedia of the pituitary gland. Giant cells and granulomas were absent in the pathologic specimen, and there was no evidence of necrosis to implicate Sheehans’ syndrome as the cause. The concurrence of lymphocytic hypophysitis and thyroiditis led the authors to speculate that the two diseases could be related autoimmune disorders.
