Abstract
Computers have an influential role in our daily professional and personal lives. They are important components of the laboratory information system (LIS), our workstations, and even some lab instruments. They range from large mainframes and racks of servers, to desktop personal computers (PCs) and laptops, as well as small tablets and smartphones. Computers have become increasingly prevalent in medicine, and are important tools for the practice of informatics. Cytologists would be well served to have a general fund of knowledge in the theory and practice behind modern computing.
