Abstract

This chapter provides a broad-based review of common thoracic diseases and their etiologies within the geriatric population. Acute surgical care of these patients can be highly challenging given the variability in pathology, overlap of symptomatic presentations, and life-threatening nature of many of the conditions. Specific topics discussed include airway obstruction, hemoptysis, lung abscess, empyema, pneumothorax, nontraumatic disease of the thoracic aorta, and esophageal pathology.
