Abstract
This chapter covers the most commonly tested injuries and diseases of the esophagus, including Zenker’s diverticulum, achalasia, esophageal cancers, esophageal perforation, esophageal varices, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and hiatal hernia. Differentiating between esophageal disorders can be difficult because many symptoms overlap and physical examination is usually nonspecific. The key to proper diagnosis is taking a thorough history to guide the correct sequence of diagnostic testing. Thus, this chapter focuses on the key features of the history and diagnostic testing related to each disorder, as well as the most common surgical approaches to treatment.
