This chapter provides a general introduction to the book. The objectives of this book on osteoarthritis of the knee or hip are:

To summarize knowledge on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical aspects, and therapeutic options.

To review recent research on behavioral and neuromuscular factors in functional decline, with a special emphasis on explanatory mechanisms.
