Abstract
Merkel cells are cutaneous neuroendocrine cells that function as cutaneous mechanoreceptors. They reside in the basal epidermis, mucosal epithelium, and follicular epithelium and have a non-descript appearance that resembles neighboring keratinocytes in conventional microscopic sections. Merkel cell carcinoma (primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma) arises from the malignant transformation of Merkel cells or Merkel cell progenitors.
