Abstract

The obesity epidemic has resulted in an increase incidence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in all age groups. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a well-known microvascular complication of diabetes increases with age and is most prevalent in older adults with longstanding diabetes [1]. In one survey of 255 diabetic patients, the reported average age, number of years with diabetes, and years with painful DPN (PDPN) was 61, 12, and 6.4 years, respectively [2]. Further, as diabetes rises in all age groups worldwide, with an estimated 4.4 % prevalence by 2030, the potential for complications such as DPN with and without pain is likely to increase [3]. Considering the global epidemic of T2DM across the life span and the increase in predicted life expectancy, the need for better access to health care and in particular nursing care for the prevention and management of diabetes becomes evident.
