Abstract
The first real attempt of large-scale sweetgrass planting at Palm Key Resort by Keith Salvo failed due to improper soil fertility and lack of care. The second planting at McLeod was through my initiation. By serendipity, Mr. Lawrence Walker was a member of the South Carolina Agricultural Society, the second oldest agricultural organization that originated in colonial South Carolina. The “Ag. Society” was instrumental in the establishment of CREC in 1932 and has always maintained a very close relationship with CREC and its faculty. Mr. Walker also was the Executive Director of Historic Charleston Foundation. Established in 1947, the Historic Charleston Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to historic preservation.
