Abstract
En 1997, une Malawite, infirmière en santé communautaire, et un Canadien, étudiant en pédologie, ont interviewé des familles dont les enfants avaient été admis au centre de réadaptation nutritionnelle de l’hôpital d’Ekwendeni. Ils voulaient comprendre ce qui avait conduit à la malnutrition aiguë de ces enfants dans cette région du nord du Malawi. Les témoignages qu’ils ont recueillis auprès des membres de la collectivité faisaient entendre un même son de cloche – les familles ne pouvaient plus faire face à l’augmentation des prix des engrais chimiques. La fertilité des sols avait diminué et, sans engrais, les agriculteurs ne pouvaient pas obtenir de rendements adéquats pour le maïs, principale culture vivrière des petites exploitations agricoles au Malawi (Snapp et al. 1998). Les gens estimaient que cette pénurie alimentaire était à l’origine des taux élevés de malnutrition infantile. Les femmes signalaient que leurs maris avaient de sérieux problèmes d’alcoolisme et étaient parfois violents avec elles. Beaucoup de familles se sentaient désespérées face à leur situation (Bezner Kerr 2005).
