ICU Resource Allocation in the New Millennium

Abstract

IBGE (Brazilian Institute for Geographical Statistics) has just completed the 2010 census which concluded that Brazil is transforming its profile of a younger country into an elderly one. The dimension of the Brazilian census is huge [1] (see Table 15.1). According to this census, Brazilian life expectancy in 1980 was 65.75 years, and 77.01 in 2009. In an analysis performed by this Institute, in 2050 life expectancy is expected to increase faster to 81.29. Thus, in a few decades Brazil will be comparable to countries such as Iceland (81.8), Hong Kong, China (82.2), and Japan (82.6), which are amongst the largest in the world today. Another peculiarity recently announced in the media regarding this census was related to the profile of female population which is in an excess of four million, and with a future projection of 14 million, signifying a triple increase of women in 2050 [2].
