Abstract
“Third wave therapies” have to demonstrate a strong link between their theoretical model and how the therapy is applied in practice. The cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) manual for treating chronic depression is therefore strongly disorder orientated, and emphasizes a multidimensional approach on the disturbed person–environment relationship and the patient’s cognitive–emotional development. As a consequence, social interaction is experienced as subjectively dissatisfying and is therefore avoided. Necessary adaptation and the adversities of life cannot be dealt with in adequate ways. McCullough’s CBASP’s therapeutic strategies include techniques for changing the patient’s perception as well as his or her behavior and encourage the patient to apply proactive, goal-directed, and socially acceptable behavior. The specific mechanisms underlying the therapeutic methods of new psychotherapies are clearly elucidated.
