Abstract
Cancer is the most feared of all diseases in the United States [1]. It can be useful to explain to patients that while no known intervention, whether medication or diet and lifestyle, will reduce their risk for cancer to zero, they can optimize their risk through certain behaviors, including adopting a Mediterranean diet. The association between a reduction in cancer risk and a MedDiet was first reported in clinical trials designed primarily to evaluate cardiovascular disease end points. Once these studies revealed a potential cancer-reducing benefit, researchers subsequently designed trials to evaluate the effects of a MedDiet on the risk for developing or dying from cancer as primary endpoints.
