Abstract

Moderate alcohol consumption is considered to contribute favorably to health in a Mediterranean diet. In MedDiet studies, “moderate alcohol consumption” is defined as 5–25 g of ethanol/day in women and 10–100 g/day in men. Figure 14.1 shows the volumes of 12% ethanol wine, 5% ethanol beer, and 40% ethanol (80 proof) distilled spirits that fit within this range. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) refers to “number of drinks” in its guidelines, defining “moderate alcohol consumption” as up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men [1]. This USDA range, with each drink containing 17.75 g of ethanol, falls within the range of alcohol consumption considered favorable in a MedDiet (Fig. 14.2).
