Abstract

This chapter describes key elements essential for safe and facile performance of laparoscopic procedures. Checklists are provided to assist the surgeon in preoperative preparation. The example of a common laparoscopic procedure, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, is used to illustrate general principles. Troubleshooting is emphasized, and this chapter includes tips for troubleshooting new energy modality platforms such as the LigaSure™ and ForceTriad™. Issues that are specific to particular procedures (for example, laparoscopic adrenalectomy or laparoscopic bariatric surgery) are described in the chapters that follow.
