Abstract
Both chronic systemic inflammatory diseases and neurological diseases occur frequently so an occurrence of both in a single patient may be due to chance alone. However, there are a number of systemic inflammatory diseases which commonly involve the nervous system. Selected ones which are most likely to be seen by a practicing neurologist in the community are briefly summarized below. A more thorough review of neurological involvement in patients with rheumatic disease was recently published by Sofat et al. [1]. Rheumatic disease, or rheumatism, is a term used to denote the field of medicine of connective tissue and joint disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vasculitides, and other diseases in which inflammation is prominent and a precise etiology has not been defined.
