Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is one of the autoimmune disorders affecting the nervous system. However, in the field of clinical neuroimmunology, lupus presents a particularly complex problem in that it affects the nervous system at multiple levels, with a possible separate neuropathological process underlying each. Clinically, the neurologist and the psychiatrist have to consider SLE in the differential diagnosis of the commonest neuropsychiatric symptoms. In addition, both neurologists and psychiatrists are called upon in consultation to diagnose and manage nervous system complications due to the involvement of other organ systems, or secondary to therapy. Most of the neuropsychiatric symptoms seen in patients with lupus are a result of metabolic complications of the disease or hypertension, or opportunistic infections secondary to immunosuppressive therapy (or the side effects of therapy).
