Abstract
Charles Messier was born on June 26, 1730, in the principality of Salm in the town of Badonviller. He was the tenth of 12 children of Nicolas and Françoise Messier. Nicolas Messier held a high position in the dukedom’s administration, and Charles enjoyed the benefits of being a member of an affluent household. Mortality during this time was high, though. Charles would lose some of his siblings in their early childhood, but this was a common during this time.
