Abstract
There are many forms of Johannes Hevelius’s name, including Hevel, Hövel, Hewel, Höfelcke, Hewelcke, Höwelcke, Höfelius, Hövelius, Höwelius, and Heweliusz. Today he is known as Johannes Hevelius (1611–1687). Johannes Hevelius’s father was Abraham Höwelcke (1576–1649) and his mother was Cordelia Hecker (1576–1655). His family were the owners of a profitable brewery and several houses. He was a member of a large family, with three brothers and six sisters. He was the only son to survive childhood. The family lived in the city of Danzig under control of Poland.
