Abstract

Personality theory and research is a global enterprise, yet its trends and findings have only been slowly incorporated into American personality curricula. This chapter attempts to accelerate this process. The very concept of personality, rooted in Euro-American thought, is critically examined and compared with non-Western conceptions. Empirical links between culture and personality are actively investigated, while the worldwide relevance of fundamental Euro-American personality traits is explored. The effects of socialization and their limits continue to be researched, and neuropsychology of personality is emerging. A multiplicity of research approaches, simultaneously and internationally pursued, is advocated, and a continuing dialogue of contributors to personality psychology across nations and languages is proposed.
