Abstract

The following chapter from Helen Singer Kaplan’s superb book, The New Sex Therapy, illustrates the basic principles which underlie her approach to the treatment of patients with sexual dysfunctions utilizing a method which is both dynamically and behaviorally sophisticated. Her approach is flexible, combining conjoint and individual psychotherapy with the systematic prescription of sexual experiences. In this sense it uses a “behavioral” methodology, guided by the therapist’s sensitive awareness to the underlying psychodynamic conflicts and processes involved in the development of symptoms, the meaning of these symptoms relative to the couple’s interpersonal relatedness, and the response to therapeutic intervention.
