Abstract
Intelligent and careful observations made by biologists at the beginning of this century revealed that certain insects show spectacular sensitivity in scent perception: So-called “sex attractants” or, as we call them today, sex pheromones (for definition see Karlson and Lüscher, 1959) lure members of the opposite sex and release a sequence of precopulatory behavior activities. Already the early findings indicated that the active principle(s) involved may occur in extremely low amounts. Indeed research scholars exploring this exciting field of insect biochemistry must accept the challenge of developing utmost experimental skill in using extremely sensitive analytical methods of detection and special ultra-microchemical methods of handling sex pheromones and pheromones in general. Thus, especially for the newcomer to this field, it may be profitable as well as enlightening to become acquainted, from the outset, with some of the principal technical essentials required in pheromone research. Also, the following reflections on the pioneering period of pheromone research will illustrate how fortunate it was to choose, for opening this principally new area of research, just an insect species as the model (Butenandt, 1939, 1941).
