Abstract

Because of the vital role of water as a transporting agent, chemical solvent, and catalyst, quantitative data on hydrology are of paramount importance in understanding the biogeochemistry of an ecosystem. The U.S.D.A. Forest Service has monitored and maintained accurate records of precipitation and stream flow for watersheds of the HBEF since 1956.
