Abstract
The following is more of an editorial than a typical chapter based on key citations and a synopsis of data. Indeed, I have neither data nor references to cite. Instead, I offer summary opinions that I have gathered during my 15 years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (1969-1984) and 11 years in academic life (1984 to present). Having received many years of generous research grant support from federal agencies (taxpayer’s dollars), as well as ample funding from corporate-sponsored research agreements, I am of the opinion that both are needed to sustain a comprehensive research team that can perform fundamental basic research, applied basic research, and applied clinical research simultaneously.
