Part of the book series: Surgery: Complications, Risks and Consequences ((SCRC))

Abstract

The “bar” of surgical safety has been progressively and remarkably raised over the last century, and especially over the last five decades, to a point where general anesthesia and surgery can now be delivered in a reliable, predictable, and advantageous manner to the vast majority of patients. However, we still have some way to go to reduce the incidence of complications, risks, and consequences in the surgical process. This chapter and text aims to improve the availability of information concerning the range and estimated frequency of complications associated with many surgical procedures.
