Abstract

Thrombotic occlusions of the intracranial dural sinuses and veins are potentially life-threatening conditions occurring in all age groups. Predisposing factors are, among others, dehydration, clotting disorders, pregnancy, metabolic disorders, and smoking. The wider availability of noninvasive imaging techniques has led to an increasing pickup rate for this condition and an earlier diagnosis. This in turn has led to a reassessment of the risk of death or severe disability as initially fatal cases were mainly diagnosed postmortem.
