Abstract
Acantholysis occurs in the epidermis when there is dissolution or disruption of the intercellular attachments. The keratinocytes fall away from one another. Acantholysis may appear at any level of the epidermis: immediately above the basal layer of keratinocytes (suprabasal), full thickness, or superficial. Some forms of acantholytic dermatosis result from an autoimmune reaction, immunofluorescence testing may be helpful.
