Abstract
A brief introduction to control theory for linear time-invariant systems is presented in this chapter. The basic concepts and results in classical and modern control theory are introduced here, which will help understand the design and implementation of the AMB rotor levitation and surge controllers in the later chapters. The material presented in this chapter are based on some of the most popular textbooks used in systems and control courses, from well-known authors such as C.T. Chen, G.F. Franklin, T. Kailath, K. Ogata, and K. Zhou, among many others. Here we attempt to summarize and present a small part of the materials found in these textbooks that we considered to be relevant for describing the design and implementation of AMB control systems. Furthermore, at the end of each section we direct the reader to the appropriate literature for a more in-depth discussion of the different topics.
