Abstract
Imaging of the heart has many modalities; ranging from the simple chest radiograph using X-rays, through to sophisticated digital imaging of cardiac function and metabolism, using magnetic resonance or advanced nuclear techniques of positron emission tomography. There are both invasive and noninvasive techniques. The vast majority of the tests are diagnostic, attempting to elucidate any pathology, some aim to assess cardiac function and structure. Other techniques form the foundation for therapeutic interventions. Advances in cardiac imaging have enabled the health-care profession to access the heart with enhanced diagnostic skills and to gather vital information for planning the management of cardiac disease.
