Abstract

“Grain itch” has been known for a long time. Bernadino Ramazzini in 1700 noted uneonfirmed reports of “lousiness” amongst bakers, miliers and corngrinders (Glass 1948). Similar eruptions were recorded in the United States in 1829, 1830 and 1945, the earlier attacks being attributed to the wheat stem fly (Webster 1910).
