Abstract
Acute pancreatitis is the most common inflammatory process affecting the pancreas. In the USA, more than 200,000 patients are admitted for acute pancreatitis per year, costing more than $2 billion annually. The frequency of hospital admission for acute pancreatitis has been progressively increasing, resulting in higher medical care cost. Certain groups of population (blacks and older patients) have disproportionately high hospitalization rates for pancreatitis.
