Abstract

If SETI produces results, and we manage to detect signals from other civilizations in the galaxy, we will have a problem. No doubt, the commotion due to this news would be enormous and its repercussions wide-ranging. But the problem we refer to here is different. Could we understand the signal? Even if this signal were designed by our galactic neighbors to be easily decipherable, could we, nonetheless, understand anything? In short, is there any common language of communication possible?
