Abstract

Body composition assessment methods are useful for the screening of excess body fat and its related metabolic complications. Reliable and practical measurements of body fatness and its distribution pattern are necessary in epidemiological, clinical and population studies for monitoring overweight and obesity and its outcomes or consequences. Childhood and adolescence are critical periods in human life due to the multiple changes that take place between birth and adulthood. The global acceleration of both growth and maturation, especially during the first 2 years of life and adolescence, imply that parameters to assess nutritional status differ considerably in every stage.
