Abstract
During the past decade, minimally invasive surgery has become the standard approach for live donor nephrectomy and is increasing in frequency for all other nephrectomy indications. With increasing laparoscopic experience and improvements in technology, resection of larger renal tumors has become feasible and more widely accepted among minimally invasive urologic surgeons. For smaller, favorably located lesions, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is increasingly being offered in many centers. Equally important, long-term oncologic follow-up data have demonstrated equivalence when compared with traditional open techniques. This chapter describes and assesses the various laparoscopic techniques available for radical and partial nephrectomy for malignant renal tumors. We also seek to synthesize the available data regarding the oncologic aspects of minimally invasive renal surgery.
