Abstract

This chapter provides information about four psychological comorbidities common in people with cancer: depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and sexual problems. The general organization of the chapter is to first describe the etiology of these comorbidities, noting in particular mechanisms relatively specific to cancer and its treatment. Next, information is provided about the prevalence and course of depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and sexual problems in people with cancer and about the procedures typically used in oncology settings to assess these comorbidities. Results of randomized controlled trials with cancer patients bearing on the management of these comorbidities are then summarized. To facilitate translation of research into clinical practice, methods are described for developing evidence-based treatment recommendations based on this literature. In addition, descriptions are provided of several interventions found to be efficacious in the randomized controlled trials reviewed which also possess good potential for dissemination and incorporation into clinical practice. The chapter concludes with a consideration of existing gaps in research on psychological comorbidities in cancer and recommendations for conducting research more relevant to clinical practice.
