Health and Quality of Life

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Social Indicators Research Series ((SINS,volume 31))

A host of research from the past decades has accumulated evidence that health is a consistent determinant of quality of life (QoL). However, both health and QoL are poorly defined concepts. Moreover, the association between health and QoL may not be equally strong across the life course. The salience of health in the lives of older people may change with increasing age. This chapter sets as its task to show distinctions between aspects of health, conceptualisations of health-related QoL, and furthermore, to critically examine the notion of a relation between health and QoL in older age. In particular, the salience of health in healthy and ill older people and changes with ageing in this salience are examined. A review of the literature will be followed by empirical evidence from both quantitative and qualitative research.
