Abstract
Li Bingde was born in 1912 in the city of Luoyang, Henan province, an area that might be described as China’s cultural heartland. The province is in from the coast and just south of Hebei which surrounds the capital city of Beijing. Henan’s ancient capital, Kaifeng, housed the imperial palaces of the Northern Song dynasty (from 960-1127 CE), and there are many cultural and archaeological treasures throughout this large agriculturally rich province, including the famous Shaolin monastery.
