Abstract
This chapter provides a brief overview of the coal industry and indicates how coal—the old lady of the energy industry—has made a come back. The chapter introduces the reserves, demand, and supply situations in coal and discusses the regional demand pattern. It also indicates the role of clean coal technologies for future development of the industry.
