Abstract

Halden Virtual Reality Centre was established by IFE in Halden in 1996. Early activities focussed on 3D modelling and using off-the-shelf virtual reality (VR) software tools in bilateral projects. Since 1998 there has been a greater focus on fundamental research through activities for the Halden Project. Novel applications of VR and wearable augmented reality systems have been explored in order to provide Halden Project member organisations with recommendations and guidelines, to enable decision makers to determine when and if it is appropriate to use these promising technologies. Computer hardware costs and performance are no longer a significant limitation to the application of advanced, interactive, 3D virtual environments, so there is increasing interest in applying this technology effectively.
