Abstract
In Chapter 3 we considered examples of geosets of territories that were constructed on the basis of the following approaches:
-
1.
Dealing with a predetermined territory T of area AT, we assume that a population P or two populations P and Q are distributed over T, which is divided into a convenient number Nc of cells i (i = 1, 2,..., Nc), of regular hexagonal shape and area AT/Nc; Nc = FP for populations of moderate size and Nc < FP for large populations; centers (X i , Y i ) of cells i are determined
-
2.
If we wish to calculate the geostatistical parameters of T, as gross territory, we use the geoset gU as an approximate base: gU = {X i , Y i ; w i c = 1/Nc} (4.1)
-
3.
If greater precision is required, some geostatistical parameters, such as those measuring dispersion, can be adjusted in order to take intracell dispersion into account.
-
4.
From the comparison between gP and gU, we derive geosets gH and gNH of habitat and nonhabitat. Habitat can be further subdivided into (a) the subterritory corresponding to the match between gP and gU; (b) the subterritory corresponding to surpluses gSPU of gP over gU.
-
5.
From the comparison of two population geosets gP and gQ over the same territory T, we derive territorial geosets gTSPQ, gTSQP, gTM(P, Q), and gTV(P, Q), which serve as a basis for calculating approximations to the geostatistical parameters of these territories.
