Abstract
When is a database system considered a “real-time database system”? Up to now there has been no scientific definition. The minimum requirements for a data base system to carry the label “real-time” could be summarized tentatively as follows:
-
• The throughput of data must stay in synch with the input, which for database system basically means that such operations as insert, select, update and delete records must be executed within predefined time frames.
-
• A further requirement for a database system to qualify as a “real time” system would be that such operations be performed “suffi ciently” fast.
