Abstract
Defining the source of pollution is sometimes a contentious affair. Pollution from human sources is readily characterized by the presence of the synthetic estrogen, ethinylestradiol. Steroid and sterol profiles are characteristic of different CAFOs, e.g. 17α estradiol is typical of cattle, a high ratio of androstenedione/testosterone is characteristic of aquaculture. This can be combined with the new methods of bacterial phenotyping for source determination.
