Abstract

Quick deployment and advancement in technologies have propelled the growth of mobile services in China. Since China contributes to about 20% of world’s mobile subscriber base, it is important to study the factors that affect the growth of mobile telecom services. However, penetration of mobile services is not uniform across different regions of China. Though a number of cross-country studies exist, this is one of the first attempts to study the growth of mobile services across service areas of China. It is our objective to study what factors affect the growth of mobile services across different services areas of China. We model growth of mobile services using technology diffusion framework, incorporating other variables that impact growth. Our analysis of panel data using the model indicate that apart from traditional factors such as income and population, fixed line penetration seems to compliment growth of mobile services in China. The network effect also seems to be more prominent. Reasons for the above effects are discussed.
