Abstract
This chapter focuses on China’s e-government practices. Compared to other world economic powers, the Chinese government has been slow in adopting the Internet technology in carrying out its administrative and public service functions. As China’s Information technology infrastructure improves and its Internet user population continues to grow, however, the government has become increasingly convinced by the significance and benefits of conducting its business online. The chapter reviews the evolution of e-government in China, examines its current status, identifies the unique problems and challenges China faces, and highlights recent Chinese government initiatives that promise to dramatically change China’s e-government landscape.
