Problem Solving: A Teaching and Therapeutic Tool for Older Adults and Their Families

Abstract

Problem solving is integral to clinical reasoning and everyday occupational therapy practices. It can also be a systematic therapeutic modality for identifying client or family caregiver concerns and teaching new approaches to self-management. This chapter presents a systematic approach to help occupational therapists identify target problem areas and potential modifiable contributing factors when working with older adults and families. The approach is applicable to a broad range of clinical problems associated with the consequences and management of chronic illness and provides therapists with an important tool for actively engage clients in self-management.
