This chapter studies how finite groups are put together. Finite abelian groups decompose into direct products of cyclic groups. For finite groups in general, one method, based on the Sylow theorems and further sharpened in the last two sections, leads in Section 5 to the determination of all groups of order less than 16. The other method, composition series, yields interesting classes of groups.
