Factors Affecting the Fibrillation of α-Synuclein, a Natively Unfolded Protein

  • Chapter
Book cover Misbehaving Proteins

Abstract

Substantial evidence has accumulated in the last few years that the aggregation/ fibrillation of α-synuclein is a critical factor in Parkinson’s disease (PD). α-Synuclein is a major component of intracellular inclusions known as Lewy bodies which are the pathological hallmark of PD. Mutations of α-synuclein have been associated with rare cases of familial PD.
